Gap year and international study

Not all students continue with further study or training straight after they finish school.

Deferring your studies

If there is something you want to do after Year 12 and before starting your tertiary course, deferring your studies is an option.

Deferment lets you delay starting your course. Usually, you can defer for up to a year, but some institutions let you defer for longer. Others don't allow you to defer your studies at all.

You can find out the deferment policies at various Queensland tertiary providers on the QTAC website.

In most cases, you can defer when you respond to your QTAC offer. The tertiary provider will contact you to advise what to do next.

Studying overseas

Like the idea of combining further study with travel? Studying overseas gives you the chance to see new places and meet new people, experience another language and culture and more.

Overseas study options include:

  • study tours
  • clinical placements
  • practicums
  • internships
  • student exchange
  • volunteer activities
  • university qualifications.
