Since graduating Year 12 with your QCE, what have you been doing?

I have been working for the Queensland Ambulance Service since completing a Bachelor of Paramedicine at Griffith University in 2021. Last year I began my next educational chapter, commencing a Masters in Critical Care Paramedicine at Edith Cowan University

My current focus is to be the best Advanced Care Paramedic I can. In the long term, I may specialise within paramedicine or pursue medicine. Lots of small consistent steps will get me to my goals, and I want to cherish every moment along the way.

What inspired you to become a paramedic?

Paramedics are generalists, meaning the world of medicine is open for us to explore. I enjoy being out in the community meeting different people and love that no two days are the same. Most of all, I love that the medical field provides the opportunity for a lifelong journey of growth and learning.

How did you decide what subjects to study in Years 11 & 12?

My career goals were constantly shifting so, I picked subjects that kept my options open. Engineering was a strong contender, hence the predominantly maths and physics-focused subjects. Perhaps studying Biology was my first expression of interest in healthcare.

How do you balance your study and work with your health and wellbeing?

I love to go trail running, fishing, surfing, hiking and camping. I’m lucky to have some incredible friends and family to share these moments with. I can always count on these hobbies to bring me back to my prime after a long block of shifts or a heavy study block at uni.

What other advice do you have for senior students?

Don’t hesitate in taking the first step towards your goals. Any step is a step in the right direction. Even if you later discover it was a step backwards, you will have learnt which way to move forward. Nobody achieves anything by staying in their comfort zone, and failure can provide a stronger lesson than any victory.
