Morgan Liu – Architect

What have you been doing since graduating from Year 12 at Somerville House?
I've finished a Bachelor of Architectural Design and a Master of Architecture at The University of Queensland. I'm currently working as an architect at a leading architecture firm in Australia.
I enjoy architecture because it is a highly creative and intellectually stimulating field. When you're working to deliver a building project, you’re constantly learning from all the other professionals that you're working alongside, such as engineers, environmental consultants, or graphic designers. You get to be involved in shaping the built environment and it is very satisfying seeing a project that you've worked on come to life.
How did you decide what subjects to study in Years 11 and 12?
I come from a STEM-orientated family so, naturally, I was drawn to the science subjects such as Chemistry and Biology. I was also passionate about art and enjoyed the creative outlet it provided amongst the science subjects. That’s why I paired science and maths subjects with Visual Art and Modern History.
Overall, I think it was a good balance because I had the chance to hone my analytical and problem-solving skills as well as further develop my creativity and critical thinking skills.
Coming from a STEM background, how did you decide to pursue architecture instead?
I had no idea what I wanted to do after Year 12! Initially, I applied for a science degree thinking I would want to eventually work in research or medicine. And, so, I ended up studying science for two years — changing majors many, many times. But it wasn’t the right fit for me. Eventually, I switched to studying Architecture, a field that my high school art teacher suggested in Year 12. It turned out to be a good decision as architecture is the perfect blend of art and science that I was looking for.
How do you balance your work with your health and well-being?
I make a conscious effort to not check my work emails outside of work hours and turn off notifications on my devices after a certain time. It helps me set clear boundaries between work and personal life, preventing work-related stress from encroaching on my personal time.
What other advice do you have for senior students?
Don't be too worried if you don't know what you want to do after school and don't be scared to try a few things until you find what’s right for you. Instead of feeling pressured to have all the answers right away, it's okay to take your time and explore different options.
What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on?
I had the privilege of working on the Eromanga Natural History Museum in central Queensland, which is where Australia's largest dinosaur – the Australotitan cooperensis, fondly known as ‘Cooper’ – was discovered.
