What have you been doing since graduating from Ferny Grove State High School with a QCE?

I've been volunteering with the State Emergency Service (SES) while working in hospitality and tennis coaching. I attend SES training once a week, but, if there are regular storms, I might go out to help two or three times per week.

After graduating, I realised university wasn't the right fit for me. I'm not a big fan of assignments or classroom-style learning, so I decided to work while I figured out what to do long-term.

What attracted you to the SES?

When I read an ad for SES volunteers, I was drawn to the role because of the practical skills and experience I could gain. For example, I’ve learnt how to use a chainsaw and a height safety system, how to tie various knots, and lots more. I've also met some incredible people.

Why did you decide that you wanted to be a firefighter?

While searching for career opportunities similar to my work with the SES, I saw a description for Firefighting and Rescue on the SES website. I knew it was the perfect fit as I've always gravitated to physically demanding and outdoorsy activities. I'm excited to apply for the next firefighter intake this year.

How did you choose what subjects to study in senior schooling?

I picked hands-on subjects that I enjoyed, like Drama. But I chose German because my parents are from a German-speaking country. At the start of Year 12, I swapped Biology for a Certificate III in Business, which involved a work placement in the hospitality industry. It was a fantastic way to gain paid work experience while still at school.

What advice do you have for senior students?

Find something you enjoy and build a career around it. It may take time to figure out what that is, so don't rush the process.

What is your favourite way to relax?

When I'm stressed or have time off, I like to go for a hike. It's a great way to relax and recharge.
