Since graduating Year 12 with your QCE, what have you been doing?

I finished a Bachelor of Business majoring in Economics and Public Policy at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Brisbane, and I'm currently completing a Master of Public Policy at the University of Canberra. In the professional arena, I'm a Senior Program Officer at the Queensland Public Sector Commission, spearheading initiatives that focus on Indigenous career pathways and leadership programs. This role allows me to advocate for inclusive policies and contribute to shaping the future of Indigenous communities.

Throughout this journey, I've remained deeply connected to my Aboriginal heritage, serving as an Indigenous Officer at QUT Guild and participating in programs at global infrastructure consulting firm AECOM that aim to promote Indigenous participation and procurement. The path I've chosen is not just about a series of roles, it's a commitment to making a difference.

What inspired you to work in policy?

As a regional high school graduate, I witnessed the challenges faced by my community, and this fuelled my desire to understand the impact of policies on my ancestry and the broader community. Initially, I had dreams of donning a white coat as a doctor, so I jumped into the world of biomedical science and business. However, shaping policies that could influence positive change on a broader scale became more fascinating to me. So, I pivoted to a Bachelor of Business with a major in Economics and Public Policy.

In essence, my work is more than just a career; it's a calling that allows me to weave my passion into tangible actions. It's the joy of knowing that, through my endeavours, I'm actively participating in building a better, more inclusive future.

How did you decide what subjects to study in Years 11 and 12?

I chose to keep my options open by selecting a diverse range of subjects, allowing me to explore different fields and gain a well-rounded understanding of various disciplines. This helped me to discover my strengths, interests, and passions while keeping the door open to an array of opportunities.

I also started a Certificate III in Business Administration, which was a step out of my comfort zone. But it turned out to be one of the most rewarding decisions I've made. Experiencing real-world scenarios challenged me to apply classroom concepts in practical situations, which not only boosted my skills but also ignited a passion for the field.

What other advice do you have for senior students?

Every step of my journey, including the initial pursuit of biomedical science, has been a valuable part of the exploration that led me to my true passion. It's a testament to the importance of staying open, embracing change, and following the whispers of passion, even if they lead you down unexpected paths.
